So, you re thinking seriously about running a business from home, but you are unsure as to whether or not it could work for you. There are many things you need to consider before taking this step. Running a business from home can be both a headache and a delight, so consider well the pros and cons of this venture before you make your final decision.

When you are running your own business from home, no one is the boss but you. If there are any decisions to be made, you ll be the one to make them. Everything from what time you ll start working in the morning to whether or not you ll work at all that day is all up to you. This can be a heady feeling until you consider the responsibilities that also go along with this freedom of choice. If you decide not to work for a day or two there will be no paycheck for that time coming in at the end of the week. Any decision you make can directly affect the success or the failure of your business. You must be disciplined when you are running your own business from home, and this isn t always easy to do when you are in the comfort of your own house.

Since you are the only person running this business, you are free to work when you want, and take off as much time as you want. This can be tempting unless you are truly motivated. You may find that even when you allow yourself some time off, you cant get your work off of your mind. Sometimes, you may even feel guilty lounging about when you know there is work you could be doing. It is very important to have balance when you are running a business from home. Otherwise, you may burn yourself out quickly. Set a schedule of times to work and times to have a day or two off at the beginning of every month, and try to stick to it as much as possible.

Running a business at home means you ARE the business, in a sense. All the profits belong to you. This can sound really good at first until you began to realize that everything comes with a price. You are doing the workload of an office full of people, all by yourself. Could you pay an office staff and yourself with the profits you are making? Dont sell yourself short. Time is money, and your time is valuable.

You no longer have to dash around the house every morning getting ready to go to work when you are running a business from home. You are at work the moment your feet hit the floor in the morning! You don t have to drive to and from work, fight traffic, buy gasoline, or keep up with the wear and tear on your car caused from commuting. But you will find that when you are working at home, there always seems to be a distraction, especially if you have other family members at home with you, or pets. You may end up feeling like you just have to load the dishwasher or put a load of clothes in the dryer. The dog needs to go out. The cat jumps on your keyboard. Your children or partner/spouse need your attention and wont take no for an answer. All this, when you should be working! It can make you quite irritable and you might find it hard to keep your mind focused on your work.

The only way to get around this is to have a family conference. Explain the importance of your work to the family budget. Try to make a schedule of office hours and post it in a prominent spot in your home. With a little extra effort, you will get used to working at home and can become more productive once everyone is used to the routine.
