Unfortunately, some people will believe just about anything that you tell them, and they are usually the ones who fall victim to unscrupulous hucksters who peddle their wares in the guise of “home based businesses.”

Many online businesses have good points as well as bad points, and you can probably make money in just about any of them, but you need to know a few things.

A System

The key to being successful is having a system in place that, if followed, will lead you to financial freedom (or to whatever it is you seek). Every day I see “businesses” that involve someone talking people into handing over their hard-earned money for an “opportunity” that doesn t stand a snowball s chance in Miami of succeeding.

The entire “pitch” is based on something like: “All you have to do is find X number of people (just like you) who you convince to give you Y number of dollars for a chance to make a fortune! Then they will go out and find X number of people, and so on until you eventually get paid.”

“So let me get this straight… All I need to do is go out and find people who want to give me their money? Hey, that sounds easy… how do I do it?”

“Well… uh… call your friends and family… if they love you they ll help you out!”

Yeah, right.

The truth is that while some people are “born salesmen,” the rest of us have to rely on the truth (and our integrity) when we promote a product.

What this “business” lacks is a system (and some scruples, but we won t get into that) that the new person getting involved can follow. If there is a system in place that (hopefully) works, and if the new person follows it, then at least they stand a chance of succeeding… without a system they may as well just give their money away.

A Product or Service

There are also “businesses” that don t even have a product or service to sell! The other day I received a very professional looking marketing packet and presentation from a very nice gentleman. After his pitch, I asked him what products they carried (NOTE: Some MLM companies have phenomenal products and services). His answer surprised me, “Well, we don t actually have any products. We are in the process of building a distribution team so that once we do have products we ll be ready to set the world on fire.”

Huh?

I m not kidding… people are buying into this business in the hope that they will eventually have products to sell! To be fair, as part of the “distribution team” (that doesn t have anything to distribute) you get to subscribe to all sorts of positive-thinking books, tapes, and other stuff. Never underestimate the power of positive thinking, it can work wonders in your life, so maybe that is what makes this business attractive to people.

Heed this advice: If someone shows you a business that doesn t have any products or services to sell (or use), ask yourself how you are going to convince other people to participate. If you aren t a “born salesman” (like the guy who is apparently trying to pitch the idea on you), walk away.

Well, people learn how to run an internet business, or business in general in many different ways. Some pay thousands of dollars and invest years of study to get a college education in the field of business (usually just to graduate and go to work for someone else). Others learn how to run a business from a family member that has already invested the “sweat equity” in the business, made all the mistakes, and now have a successful operation. Still others are self-taught. They read, listen, ask questions, observe, research and seek out the knowledge they need to start a business and to make it profitable.

If you have seen or tried money-making opportunities on the web and failed (meaning you didn t make your investment back or one dime for that matter) then there is obviously a problem. Was it the business? Was it you? Was it lack of knowledge, resources, guidance, motivation, dedication, fear, ignorance, etc? Only you can answer that. The important point about that statement is you have to find the answer to that question. Why did you fail? If you can honestly answer that question then you at least have a starting point to solve the problem and move forward. The next time you engage in a business venture you will at least know why the previous one failed and you can avoid that mistake again.

One opinion I have as to why countless people fail at home-based, online businesses is because they don t have the proper knowledge and guidance to show them how to make it work. People are making money on the internet. You can t tell me that they are all Harvard business graduates! There has got to be, even just a few, average Joe s like you and I that don t necessarily have all the smarts and resources to make millions on the web just by joining some online opportunity. How are these people doing it!?

I think one reason is that the successful people follow a system - a proven system that has been tested over years and has remained viable. A system that promotes mentorship to the persons that join it. A mentor that is available to walk you through the steps and guide you in exactly what to do and when to do it. If it worked for one person, why can t it work for the next? Find a business system that is duplicable and repeatable - one that has made money for someone else. If it can be duplicated then it should work for you.

Above all, do your due diligence! You wouldn t buy a business franchise without spending hour after hour reviewing all aspects of the business model, would you? If you would stop now - you are destined for failure. You have to analyze each and every opportunity you are considering and determine if it is a viable business opportunity. Then and only then can you have a chance at making any money with a home-based, internet business.

Allow me to give you an example, a friend of mine asked me to look over her video for opinion sake. The graphics were great and her content was well thought out but the more I watched the more I wanted to cringe. She sounded like a five year old on a sugar high. This may have worked if she trying to imitate a hyperactive child but being that her piece was about “why choose MLM” her voice didn t fit. Her audience is less likely to take her seriously as opposed to someone who had a professional speaking voice.

Another example is a video I watched a while ago that revealed secrets to making millions online. This is an exciting topic, and the speaker should have conveyed that to his audience but ten minuets into it and I was falling asleep. His voice was dry and lacked enthusiasm- the kind that would be felt by anyone who found his video. It took everything I had to stay awake for the second tip.

When you stop to consider it you begin to realize how important it is to have the right voice for your video or audio project. Even if you re a very pretty girl, your voice is still imperative to keeping the readers attracted. A person who knows how to control their voice can control
another person just by speaking. Unfortunately, the average person can t control their voice as well as someone who has a talent and has trained their voice.

Using voice over actors can greatly improve the quality of your video. But let s be honest, many of us don t have the small fortune it takes to hire one of those. This is why learning how to do your own voice overs can still help you earn money working from home without having to spend too much.

My friend for instance was very excited about completing her first video and her voice conveyed that. She would have benefited by doing some voice exercises and practicing several times in front of the mirror. This would have helped her to warm up her voice and made her more confident so could speak in a clear, professional manner.

This applies to everyone who choices to use videos or audios to market. Practice and know your market. You want to avoid having long awkward “what am I supposed to say now” pauses or those “I want to get this over with” rushed moments.

Study what you hear on radios and television and listen to them critically. Then practice reading out loud. Read everything, billboards, cereal boxes, read out loud. And before you officially sit down to your do your video, record your voice and have someone else critic it.

We are not all professional voice actors but if you want to have a professional sounding video you re going to have to train your voice a little, doing so will most likely result in earning money working at home.

During my 4 mile bike ride this morning, I started thinking about home offices. I can t explain why I just started thinking about home offices. And then I started to think about what makes a good office set-up for professional salespeople?

During my sales training programs I often ask salespeople how many days a week do they work from a home office. You d be amazed at the responses I ve gotten. It runs the gamut from zero to three days a week. Different businesses have different requirements and protocols for their salespeople.

When you spend a half day a week or three days a week selling from your home office it s important that you set it up in a way that maximizes your productivity.

I remember years ago my first office was tucked into a corner of my one-bedroom apartment in New York City. The desk consisted of two 2-draw file cabinets with an old door placed over the file cabinets to serve as a desktop. Those were the days

It scares me to think about all the selling tools I didn t have when I started my first sales job. Whether you re just starting out in the selling profession or are a seasoned sales veteran here s a list of things to consider for your home office.

First things first!

1. Ideally, you want to have a dedicated room for your office. I realize that s not always possible but it s always a practical idea.

2. A good size desk with a return for your computer. I think, the bigger the better. Remember, this will serve as command central for your business.

3. Good lighting is important especially if you work includes a lot of reading.

4. A desktop telephone and a headset. Wearing a headset enables you to become more animated and energetic on all important telephone calls. This can have a big impact on your selling results.

5. Color-coded filing system. Use red folders for high priorities, yellow folders for medium priorities, and use blue folders for low priorities. Use a desk organizer for these priorities folders.

6. A desktop computer with a flat-panel 19 inch screen is ideal for most applications.

7. You should also consider the following: a fax machine, a copier, a scanner, a printer, a color printer, and the postage meter if you do frequent mailings. You d be amazed how much time you can waste going to and from the post office.

8. Since time is money I also suggest a clock and a timer to keep you on time.

9. You might also want to consider a videocam and a digital tape recorder. While you re at it a digital camera.

10. Within arms reach I also suggest having a dictionary and a thesaurus. Open the dictionary and cross out the following words - can t, impossible, hope, and discount. Tomorrow I m flying to California. I m not hoping the pilot can get me there, I m expecting him to get me there - that s a big difference. And remember, when you re selling, you get what you expect!

11. Depending on how much time you spend in your office and of course your budget, you should have a very comfortable chair.

12. A white board - the bigger the better. It s a great place to post your goals in your results. Written goals make things happen for salespeople, so why not put them up in neon lights so you can see them every working day.

13. The more time you spend in your home office the more important this is. Fill your office with things that inspire and motivate you.

14. You should also have a bookcase filled with inspirational, motivational, informational, and educational books. The size of your bookcase is a pretty good predictor of your selling success.

You should also buy a couple of big three ring binders. Buy a couple of reams of 3-hole copy paper. There s a lot of good information available as downloads that you can print and file in these binders.

Clutter affects creativity. Every three months toss away everything in your office that isn t essential for your home office productivity.

As time goes by continue to add things to your office that make you more comfortable and more productive.

Just don t get too comfortable in your office. Do everything you can to optimize your face-to-face selling time with your sales prospects and customers - that s where the real action is.

Here s another option to earning money from home. Learn how to make tons of money in affiliate marketing. You have the opportunity right now to learn how to get traffic to any affiliate product you want to. Without web traffic, you won t make a dime. This is a program that will take you by the hand and show you step by step how to generate traffic so you can start making some money. Once you are taught how to generate traffic, (and this is the key to earning a buck load of money), this program will let you in on what hot in demand products to sell. Another method you will learn is, you can start generating money using free resources. When you are running your own business from home, no one is the boss but you. If there are any decisions to be made, you ll be the one to make them. Everything from what time you ll start working in the morning to whether or not you ll work at all that day is all up to you. This can be a heady feeling until you consider the responsibilities that also go along with this freedom of choice. If you decide not to work for a day or two there will be no paycheck for that time coming in at the end of the week. Any decision you make can directly affect the success or the failure of your business. You must be disciplined when you are running your own business from home, and this isn t always easy to do when you are in the comfort of your own house.

Since you are the only person running this business, you are free to work when you want, and take off as much time as you want. This can be tempting unless you are truly motivated. You may find that even when you allow yourself some time off, you cant get your work off of your mind. Sometimes, you may even feel guilty lounging about when you know there is work you could be doing. It is very important to have balance when you are running a business from home. Otherwise, you may burn yourself out quickly. Set a schedule of times to work and times to have a day or two off at the beginning of every month, and try to stick to it as much as possible.

Running a business at home means you ARE the business, in a sense. All the profits belong to you. This can sound really good at first until you began to realize that everything comes with a price. You are doing the workload of an office full of people, all by yourself. Could you pay an office staff and yourself with the profits you are making? Dont sell yourself short. Time is money, and your time is valuable.

You no longer have to dash around the house every morning getting ready to go to work when you are running a business from home. You are at work the moment your feet hit the floor in the morning! You don t have to drive to and from work, fight traffic, buy gasoline, or keep up with the wear and tear on your car caused from commuting. But you will find that when you are working at home, there always seems to be a distraction, especially if you have other family members at home with you, or pets. You may end up feeling like you just have to load the dishwasher or put a load of clothes in the dryer. The dog needs to go out. The cat jumps on your keyboard. Your children or partner/spouse need your attention and wont take no for an answer. All this, when you should be working! It can make you quite irritable and you might find it hard to keep your mind focused on your work.

The only way to get around this is to have a family conference. Explain the importance of your work to the family budget. Try to make a schedule of office hours and post it in a prominent spot in your home. With a little extra effort, you will get used to working at home and can become more productive once everyone is used to the routine.
